Commonplace

I’ve made (another!) journal for my collection of prayer, scripture, and quotes.

This isn’t just a faith journal; it’s a commonplace book. The concept goes back to the ancient Greeks and Romans; commonplace books were used to store information, quotes, and reflections for later use – a little like how we keep folders on our Drive, but in written form. The word comes from the Greek “koinos topos,” meaning “general theme”.

From as early as the 8th century, preachers and theologians used commonplace books to collect biblical passages and writings of Church Fathers, arranging them either chronologically or thematically.

I’m loving having something that I can see and touch. Not least because I’m a stationery addict!
